While SMS has been adopted by agencies as a marketing tool and is widely adopted as a form of communication, it has remained little changed since it first appeared over 20 years ago.
But that is soon about to change, if London headquartered Affle has its way. The company is pioneering SMS2.0, which introduces a variety of text and background colors, emoticons and additional content to the plain old texting service.
Their product has been rolled out by Airtel in India and their website indicates that they are focused in rolling out further across the region. I haven’t yet seen how this differentiates from other mobile IM services and the ad-supported model mentioned on CNET is unproven – either way, this will be an interesting product to watch.
